Common Smells That Are Telltale Signs Of Car Trouble

Your car is one of the most expensive purchases you make. Although many people don’t consider a car an investment, it is best if you treat it like one. To make sure your car is a source of convenience for you, it is important that you keep it well maintained and in top notch condition.

Car breakdowns are a common nightmare for every driver as no one wants to wait for roadside assistance in the middle of nowhere. You know what to do if your car breaks down on the motorway at night, but you don’t want to ever have to go through that experience.

Your car gives warning signs before it actually stops working, but like others, you might also not understand the warnings. People ignore the small warning signs such as a noise coming from their car or some strange smell coming from their car.

But these warning signs are an indication that something is wrong with your car and it needs to be fixed as soon as possible. So it is up to you to be vigilant and spot these warning signs and get your car fixed at the earliest before it’s too late.

In this blog post, we will discuss some of the warning indications that most people tend to ignore. We will also outline 3 common smells that may signal trouble for your car.

The Old Sock Smell

This is a very common smell that tends to occur in the summer. This kind of old sock smell or in general wet, damp, musty smell is caused by a problem in your air conditioning unit.

In the summer as the AC is used frequently, sometimes the condensation in your AC instead of draining may start to build up inside the air conditioning unit. Which then accelerates the mold and mildew growth.

The solution to this problem is to get your AC system cleaned by a mechanic near you. But if you are on the road and this kind of problem occurs, an interim solution is to turn off the AC. This will help dry out the moisture inside your system.

But if you are on the road and this damp smell becomes persistent then you should park your car and call a professional towing company.

Burning Smell

If your car starts to smell like something is burning then there is something wrong with your brakes. When your brake rotors or pads are not aligned properly, unnecessary friction is caused which then results in this burning smell.

Moreover, if your brake pads are worn out, they can also cause unnecessary friction in your engine creating a burning smell. In addition to this, if you drive a manual car there are chances that the burning smell could be caused by the clutch. If the clutch is faulty it makes acceleration difficult which then results in a burning smell.

So if your car smells like something is burning you should immediately take it to a mechanic and get it fixed because if the issue is prolonged it can cause a bigger problem in the future.

Rotten Egg Smell

The main culprit of a rotten egg smell or a sulfur smell is your car’s exhaust system. More specifically the sulphuric smell signals that there is something wrong with your catalytic converter. The catalytic converter is used to convert the harmful gases in your car’s exhaust into simpler compounds.

If this kind of sulphuric or rotten egg smell persists outside your car especially near the tailpipe then your catalytic converter is broken or malfunctioning. So as soon as you smell this sulfur smell you should take your car to a mechanic because driving your car with a broken catalytic converter is dangerous for humans as well as the environment.

Even if you are on the highway, park your car at a safe spot and call a professional towing company. A professional towing company will be able to provide you with the right roadside assistance services and help solve your catalytic converter issue.
